Stuttering in school children: causes and prevention

Even we as adults can stutter sometimes, but when we stutter, it is said that we are overexcited and are lost for words, but stuttering children are called unconfident. And if your child is called unconfident all the time, he can go into depression without any fault.

Stuttering in children is another big issue that can lead to social anxiety, it can strike fear in your child and cause him future problems, but don’t worry we are here to help you make your child stutter-free and more confident.

In this blog, we will discuss the causes of stuttering and how to get permanently rid of it in your child.

Causes

Stuttering is a major problem in children and it can be caused by various problems. Here are some of those causes.

Bullying: – Was your child more confident before going to school? Then what happened to him in school, he must be getting bullied, bullying is one of the root causes of stuttering in children, but it’s not the case in New Choudhary Public School Jaipur as we have taken strict measures for a bullying-free school.

Bullies have nothing else to do other than harming innocent children. Bullying can slowly cause your child to lose confidence in himself, be afraid of everyone, and then eventually stutter.

Curiosity not cleared: – Some children are way more curious than others; these are the kids that question the cause of everything and even ask a lot of questions in class, such children are often ignored by friends and even teachers get frustrated sometimes and send such kids out of the class.

If your child is a victim of his curiosity not being cleared, he will eventually stutter when talking and may even stop talking at all.

Stuttering from the start: – your child may stutter from the time he learns to talk, this can be due to genetics or being completely ignored by parents.

Prevention

We as an RBSE School in Pratap Nagar Jaipur have created a motto, a stutter-free child is a more confident one, keeping that in mind, here are some points that will prevent your child from stuttering and get rid of it over time.

Stop bullying: – to stop bullying, we must understand bullies; we usually think that a bully is a bad guy from the start, but a student becomes a bully only if.

  • He is with the wrong group of friends.
  • He is frustrated with his own life and thus will need someone weaker than him to take out his frustration.
  • He is ignored by his peers because he has an unlikely habit that his friends don’t like.

We at NCPS Jaipur have taken the initiative to treat all children as equal so that none of our students become a bully.

Handle students with patience: – Our teachers are regularly taught how to handle each student with patience; after all, children are curious.

For the extra curious ones, we have started a program in which these students are given the time to ask as many questions as possible and each question is answered to a satisfactory level, no matter how stupid or common it is

What you can do?

If the first 2 points don’t apply to your child, then here’s what you should do, in case your child stutters because of genetics or if it’s not genetic, what you can do to help in some spare time that you have taken from your busy schedule.

  • You should regulate the rate of your child’s speech, if your kid speaks fewer words at first, he will not gain any strain in his brain and will be able to speak more freely, you can gradually increase the rate of speech as your kid improves.
  • It is important to not correct your kid when he wrongly pronounces a word, you should know that stuttering happens due to lack of flow and not lack of knowledge, letting your child speak freely will eventually stop his stuttering.
  • You can use a family gathering to your child’s benefit, when your kid starts chatting more in family gatherings, his confidence will surely increase, just keep in mind to not correct him and tell your guests to do the same.
  • You can hand your child a toy or something else that he likes when his stuttering becomes intense, however, he should not feel that he got the toy because he is stuttering too much.
  • You should speak calmly and slowly with your child, not because he doesn’t understand you, but he shouldn’t be left out, this will increase in confidence in talking with others and he will do the talking part without you as time passes.

If the above points don’t work for you, you can always take your child to one of our speech therapists at RBSE School in Pratap Nagar.
